Kelly, Sam and I started the scramble up on Grotto before sunrise around 7:30.

After following Kane's description for the direct route we still ended up at the wrong side of the gully. We decided to scramble down into the gully and then up to the right side. This side of the gully was steep and the snow didn't make it easy on us. Halfway up Kelly realized that he lost his ice-axe and chances were pretty big that he had to use it on the way back because we could see a fair amount of snow on the ridge. We still decided to continue.

At 2:15 PM we finally summited and after a short break descended down the ridge. With strong winds and ice sections, where we had to use our crampons as well, we reached the other side of the ridge around 4:00 PM. From here it was a quick way down but we couldn't find the trail.

Kelly noticed a big cairn so we scrambled down but cliffed out. By this time it was already 5:00 PM and getting darker, so we realized that we had to hurry because we still had to loose about 900 meters. After scrambling back up to the cairn and heading skiers left the terrain was easier and we were moving down quickly. Just before darkness we found the trail and with use of our headlights we were back by the ACC at 6:30

It was a great day out and I'm very impressed by Sam because it was only his second scramble ever.
