Trip details on Storelk Mountain: After doing the Big Beehive and Devil’s Thumb the day before I was up for another day in the “hills” so when Dave Salahub suggested to do a short day on Storelk Mountain I was keen. It was hard to drag myself out of bed at 5AM but by the time we got to the trailhead I was somewhat awake. By following Kane his directions (latest edition) we avoided all bushwacking that others have experienced and soon we were at the col assessing the ascent rout up the face of the mountain. We decided to take Kane his route up and soon we arrived at the slabs and rock band which are to the right of the dark pockets that Kane describes. This terrain absolutely deserves the difficult rating and we did some hard and sustained scrambling for a while until we spotted a ramp leading up to the East ridge (look for cairn on the ridge).
At this point we also spotted some cairns going down an alternate route so at that point we decided that we would not descend Kane his route, also because we had some printouts of the routes that Vern and the Ramblers had taken previously and it looked like our route would intersect those.
We scrambled up to the ridge and made our way to the summit below the ridge crest (not recommended). After a nice long break, we took the summit ridge back to the East ridge and down the alternate descent route. This worked out good and even though still difficult it was an easier descent than what we would have had on the Kane route. We took another nice long break when we reached safer ground and then headed back down to the car while constantly yelling to scare of any bears.
