Trip details on Ben’s Hill: Another really cold day had Dave and myself wondering what to do. I had peaked Dave his interest last week when I mentioned the little summit east of Prairie Mountain called Ben’s Hill (on ViewRanger). There is not a lot of beta on this one but it is a great alternative to the much busier Prairie Mountain, although slightly lower.
We started out in -25-degree weather but stayed warm while walking up the road to the gas well. Close to it we started going up on a trail into the woods which led us to the summit ridge. A little bushwhacking got us to the summit meadow where we even found a register/geocache. In the summer one can find a circle/compass of rocks with the words Ben below it, we could make it out in the snow as well but only because we knew it was there.
After a quick stay, we headed down on one of the mountain bike trails and then the road again. In the meantime, it had warmed up a bit to -16. I might even come back in the spring as a quick after work exercise, it would make a great family hike too.
